How Addison Scurlock effected Washington, D.C.
Title
How Addison Scurlock effected Washington, D.C.
Subject
The Scurlock Studio
Description
The life of a man behind the camera is just as important as the subject he is taking the picture of. Addison Scurlock changed the way Washingtonians viewed their black counterparts during a time of great racial tension. In a city that was once one-third black it is hard to forget what the white population wanted to ignore. Washington, D.C. offered economic and social stability to the black Americans and it caused their community to thrive and Addison Scurlock was there to capture it along the way. Making Howard University and many other black institutions the focus of his camera lens he was able to give this new black movement a face.
