I am Kendall Beard, a sophomore at George Mason University and I am creating this project for my History 390 class. We were told to pick any topic in Washington, D.C.’s history in order to create a research question and to back it up with legitimate sources. The topic I picked was Addison Scurlock, and the research question I created was how he and his photography studio affected the greater D.C. area and its black community. I found all of my resources on the Internet either via databases provided by GMU or from the Smithsonian Archives. The biggest challenge I faced was finding sources that were relevant. I did not want to back up my research with scholarly articles that were made 90 years after the fact. I had to do some looking but I finally found a database that specialized in early African American newspaper articles. The amount of information I found from this database truly amazed me! The biggest thing I learned from doing the research for this project was that the information you are looking for is out there you just have to know how to find it. This project really helped me expand my cyber horizons in the ways that it helped my researching techniques, website creating, and also the ability to take the knowledge I acquired and publish it digitally.
