Description

The history of Addison Scurlock’s photography career covers almost every street of Washington, D.C. and this map is meant to show the most important locations. He started his career as an apprentice to a white owned Photography studio in downtown D.C. The Moses Rice studio was where Addison Scurlock learned the tricks of the trade and gained the proper foundation in photographer that he needed. In 1911 he opened his very own studio were he could further in talent as a photographer, but before he ever opened his studio he was already a household name because everyone knew him as the photographer for Howard University. Howard University was the home base for many of the influential African Americans that Addison loved to take pictures of. He wanted to show the new rising black middle class that was starting to grow in D.C. and that is how he will be remembered.
